THE LAST MAGIC SHOW is the first feature film written
and directed by ANDY CONLAN, with award winning cinematography
by DUNCAN COLE and co-produced by ALEX LEE,
with the support of THE SCREEN INNOVATION FUND of
NEW ZEALAND and ARKLES ENTERTAINMENT.
Shot
entirely on locations throughout AUCKLAND, NORTH SHORE
and DEVONPORT, NEW ZEALAND, it is the first feature
film of its kind to be produced here. It combines
35mm and 16mm film, DVCPro 50 digital and animation
to create two distinct worlds:the make believe arena
of amateur magic shows and the bleak landscape of
the magician that stars in them, RONNY ROMAN, who
has created a fantasy world for himself in which moments
of simple beauty peek out from behind its grey curtains.
To
create the look and feel of a unique, modern day fairytale,
ANDY CONLAN and ALEX LEE recruited an army of talented
filmmakers from every discipline, from cinematography
to art and design to costume to music composition.
The result is a dreamlike narrative that takes place
against a backdrop that is familiar yet fantastic,
transforming the everyday into something with a touch
of magic.
Before
the film was completed, this eccentric romantic dramedy
was one of the films in competition in the indie Los
Angeles Festival DANCES WITH FILMS in 2007, where
it won the Honorable Mention Jury Prize. Back in New
Zealand, the uncompleted cut won the IMAGES AND SOUND
BEST TECHNICAL CONTRIBUTION TO A DIGITAL FILM award
for cinematographer DUNCAN COLE at the AIR NEW ZEALAND
FILM ANDTELEVISION AWARDS. GEORGIE HILL, the film's
costume designer, was nominated for an award in the
same category.
THE
LAST MAGIC SHOW will be released nationwide throughout
NEW ZEALAND's four main centres on MAY 29th, 2008.
It will be playing at the RIALTO in NEWMARKET, CHRISTCHURCH
and DUNEIN and THE PARAMOUNT in WELLINGTON. Keep watching
